Saco School Committee approves superintendent’s reorganization plan including assistant superintendent role

The Saco School Committee on July 14 unanimously approved a reorganization plan from Superintendent Ray that creates an assistant superintendent position focused on curriculum and day-to-day operations and clarifies reporting lines for principals and directors.
Superintendent Ray said the role would help when the superintendent is unavailable and provide curriculum oversight: "The recommendation ... was to certainly to look to add an assistant superintendent position that would be for curriculum and other day to day tasks and act in the absence of the superintendent," he said.
Board members asked about minimum qualifications and whether strict experience requirements could discourage internal candidates. Ray said hiring committees and the superintendent could waive certain qualifications and that certification or the ability to become certified remained important.
School board member Truman moved to accept the reorganization plan and School board member Tardiff seconded; a roll-call vote recorded six yes votes and the motion passed.
The plan was presented as both an organizational clarification and a potential cost-saving measure through consolidated administration and shared services; implementation details and timing will be handled through the hiring process and subsequent board review.
