Board advances first readings of updated student and employee technology policies; AI use banned on school devices

Policy committee member (speaker 10) introduced IJNDB (student computer and Internet use), IJNDB‑R (regulations) and IJNDB‑E (acknowledgment form), saying the district has not substantially updated these policies since 2013 and the updated package refers to an annually revised handbook that sets day‑to‑day rules.
Security and AI: the presenter said school‑owned devices are monitored and locked down and that “AI is not permitted on any school computer,” adding the district is developing an internal, closed AI tool run by students and staff for internal use only.
Chromebook home use: the committee flagged a specific operational question for Diane (district staff) to study — whether Chromebooks in grades 3–5 should routinely go home. The committee will review usage and breakage data and report recommendations for the handbook ahead of a final policy vote.
Employee policies: the board also advanced GCSA, GCSAR and GCSAE (employee technology use and forms) at first reading; the presenter said employee rules closely mirror student ones with modest differences for staff responsibilities.
Board action: the board approved the first readings by voice vote without recorded opposition. Committee members said they do not expect substantial changes ahead of second reading, but they will consider any suggestions that emerge from the public or committee review.
