The RSU 73 superintendent told the school board the district received a parental complaint that led to a coordinated investigation with the Jay Police Department, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Maine Department of Education certification office. The staff member was placed on paid administrative leave beginning Feb. 27 and was arrested seven school days after the complaint; the superintendent said the person resigned on March 11, nine school days after the complaint.
The superintendent said the district followed protocol in notifying law enforcement and state agencies and that the policy committee will "tweak or update" policies and review contract language where appropriate. The statement emphasized that student safety and well-being are the district’s top priority.
Chief Sage of the Jay Police Department later addressed the board and commended school staff and investigators for their handling of the case. He urged community members to avoid spreading unverified information on social media while law enforcement works to protect evidence needed for prosecution, and said investigators found no indication other adults knew of the conduct; he described the arrested person as the single alleged perpetrator in this matter.
The board chair reminded the public that the meeting was not the forum to call out individual employees and encouraged anyone with credible information to report it directly to police; the superintendent was named as the district contact for other concerns. The district said it will continue to cooperate with law enforcement and to report any required updates through appropriate channels.
The board did not take personnel action in open session during the meeting; the superintendent said the matter remained under investigation and that further policy work will be brought to the policy committee for consideration.
