Saco School Board approves minutes, hires and first-reading policies; hears building, enrollment and curriculum updates

The Saco School Board met on Sept. 8 and conducted routine business, approving meeting minutes, new hires and a package of first-reading policies, while hearing updates on the district's building project, enrollment and curriculum priorities.

Procedural votes and approvals: the board moved to approve the meeting minutes dated Sept. 24, 2025 (motion by School Board Member Truman; second by Johnston), and the motion passed on a roll-call vote, 7-0. The board also approved new hires and stipend contracts for the 2025–26 school year on a 7-0 roll-call vote after a motion by School Board Member Truman and a second by Johnston. Later in the meeting the board approved the first reading of several policies (JE — student attendance; JKAA — use of physical restraint and seclusion and related procedures; JICIA — weapons, violence and school safety; JLCD — administration of medication to students; and BB — school board legal status) by roll call, 7-0.

Superintendent's operational updates: the superintendent (introduced in the meeting as Superintendent Wright) told the board staff have received threats in recent weeks following heightened public attention and thanked employees for continuing to serve students professionally. Wright announced community events and donations: students will participate in Kindness Day on Oct. 24 and will decorate pumpkins for Saco's annual pumpkin-harvest festival at CK Burns on Oct. 19; Dayton Sand and Gravel donated 1,700 pounds of clean sand for pre-K classrooms. Wright also invited attendees to tour facility improvements after the meeting.

Building project and timeline: the district expects a bid opening for its building project in two weeks at 2 p.m. at City Hall and anticipates about seven potential bidders. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 4 at 11 a.m.; the superintendent said final logistics and weather planning will be announced closer to the date.

Enrollment and strategic plan: staff reported October 1 projected enrollment of about 1,898 elementary students and 891 students at the academy; final counts will be locked after the district's verification window, with final figures likely available at the first November meeting. The district reported 331 responses to a strategic-plan survey (77 staff, 255 community responses) and announced four public focus-group sessions (two online on Oct. 20 at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.; two in person at Dyer Library on Oct. 21 at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.). Staff focus groups for employees are scheduled for Oct. 21 at 3:30 p.m. at Dyer Library, with administration aiming for cross-section representation of teachers and support personnel.

Curriculum priorities: district curriculum teams continue piloting English/language-arts resources linked to the science-of-reading approach; science K–5 is using Mystery Science as the anchor resource. Middle-school social-studies materials are being soft-launched with staff working to identify one unit per grade to teach in common this year.

Other business: the policy & personnel committee met earlier that day; the finance & infrastructure and curriculum committee meeting dates were announced for October. The board did not convene in executive session and adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
