Sanford officials propose fewer weekly early‑release days and spread staff in‑service time across year

Sanford's administration presented a first reading of the 2026–27 school calendar that would move away from weekly early‑release Wednesdays and instead schedule a smaller number of longer early‑release or full in‑service days spread through the year.

Under the draft, students in grades 1–9 would begin the school year on Monday, Aug. 31, with kindergarten added on Sept. 1; staff in‑service days would be scheduled in late August. The proposal includes a mix of multi‑hour early‑release days (two‑ or three‑hour ERDs) and several full staff professional development days, including a Friday in‑service (tentatively March 12) that would have no student attendance. The draft schedules a two‑hour early release in December and a later set of ERDs in March and May. Graduation is listed for Wednesday, June 2, with the last student day (absent snow makeup days) on June 9.

Administration said the change aims to reduce lost instructional time from weekly short releases while preserving opportunities for teacher planning and higher‑quality professional development. It noted coordination constraints with Sanford Regional Technical Center and other sending districts (no more than five dissimilar days) and asked for committee feedback on which Wednesdays work best for families.

Committee members raised concerns about predictability for families and suggested anchoring ERDs to a particular Wednesday (for example, the second or last Wednesday of a scheduled month). Administration said it would consult the Sanford Federation of Teachers and continue refining timing before a planned vote in March.
