Saco enrollment down 49 students; superintendent warns of subsidy impact

SACO, Maine — At its Oct. 22 meeting the Saco School Board heard an enrollment update in which district leadership said October 1 counts show a drop of 49 students compared with the prior year, including 38 fewer students classified as English-language learners.
The superintendent told the board elementary enrollment is roughly 890 students and said the decline will affect state subsidy calculations. “We are down 49 students from a year prior. Now we know the reasons why, but that is something that we have to be knowledgeable about as we head into the budget season,” the superintendent said.
District staff noted that state subsidy adjustments are typically smoothed over two years but said the board should expect budgetary implications and prepare accordingly during the coming budget cycle. No formal budget decisions were made at the meeting.
Board members did not vote on any enrollment-related measures at the session; the superintendent indicated staff would bring more detailed enrollment certification data as it becomes available.
