The RSU 26 school board authorized two new semester elective courses for Orono High School: an Honors Data Literacy course designed to meet the technology/computer-science graduation requirement and a Climate Literacies elective, both recommended by the district curriculum committee.
A curriculum representative (Susan) outlined the course rationales, target grades and how the classes would fit into the pathway to more advanced offerings such as AP research or statistics. She said the honors data-literacy class would likely use the Data Classroom materials and be aimed at ninth- and tenth-grade students who have completed foundational writing and inquiry classes.
The chair asked if members wanted separate votes; none requested a split, and the board approved both courses together with a unanimous vote.
What comes next: the district will add the courses to scheduling and staffing plans and notify students and families about elective options for the coming year.
