Students showcase Outdoor Club: 'Trout in the Classroom' partners with Trout Unlimited and 3 Rivers

Jason Matthews and several fifth‑grade students described activities and learning: Vin, a fourth grader, said the club held a GPS scavenger hunt for its first meeting and added, “We even got some hot chocolate after.” Students described observing trout development from eggs to fry in a classroom tank, discussed the care challenges (feeding, water chemistry, and avoiding problematic rocks in the tank) and noted the program’s messy, hands‑on learning value.
Staff said the program is run in partnership with Trout Unlimited, 3 Rivers Parks and the Education Foundation and that grant funding covered initial expenses. Presenters said they have about 15 students signed up for current sessions, are running activities once a month, and hope to expand next year to reach additional grade levels. The board applauded the students’ presentation.
What’s next: Staff indicated plans to continue the partnership, expand participation and share program learnings with other classrooms and families.
