Northstar Elementary principal Scott Manning presented a brief report to the board highlighting instructional initiatives and student progress.
Manning said Northstar is participating in a Reading Champions program in partnership with US Steel (Pittsburgh Penguins tie-in), and US Steel will donate a book vending machine to the school. He described a job-fair planned for May 21 that will teach students interviewing and workplace skills.
He also described a pilot construction lab in which fifth graders are learning construction measurement and trade skills by partnering with high school students; items produced may be sold to the community. Manning cited FastBridge screening data showing measurable reductions in the percentage of high-risk students in several grades and increases in college-ready reading percentages in grade 6.
The board praised staff and asked several clarifying questions about screening tools and program rollout.
