Rockford board approves summer facilities projects, including major Reams parking-lot contingency

The Rockford Public School District Board of Education voted April 21 to approve a package of summer facilities projects funded from bond funds, authorizing work that staff said amounts to roughly $488,190 for new items and highlighting a separate Reams parking-lot estimate that includes substantial contingency.
Operations staff described a slate of projects — resurfacing parking areas, track repairs, interior classroom work, additional security cameras and gates, and targeted classroom renovation — and said bids had increased since earlier estimates. "The new stuff is about $488,190," an operations presenter told the board, and staff also noted that the Reams parking lot estimate was about $900,000 with contingencies for potential below-surface corrections.
Officials said the projects are being funded from previously-issued bond monies and that staff are working with the CFO to fine-tune contingencies and ensure funds are spent by the end of the summer. Work is slated to begin June 9 and run for roughly four to six weeks, with a target of completing major items by early August so buildings are ready for the fall.
Board members asked whether additional leftover bond funds could be reallocated before the end of the allowable spending window; district staff said they would coordinate with the CFO and return with recommendations. The board approved the motion to authorize the expenditures by voice vote.
The facilities item also included updates on summer employment opportunities for student workers and a separate update that the district's food-service RFP had closed and scoring would occur the following day.
