Eveleth Elks give $10,000 for classroom dedication; district highlights grants and career‑education partnerships

Jen Benson of the Eveleth Elks told the board, “Here’s the check number 1, $10,000,” and said the lodge intends to allocate $2,000 each to social studies, DECA, science, Laurentian Elementary STARBASE, and the district’s nursing assistant program. Benson described the Elks as a charitable organization that funnels gaming proceeds and grants back into community programs.
Willie described other recent awards and supports: the Rock Ridge Educational Fund released $4,122 for targeted classroom needs, and the district secured a $128,500 Saint Louis County grant that will be administered on a reimbursement basis; Willie told the board that a $30,000 portion of the county grant “will pay for my salary next year.”
Board and school leaders also flagged partnerships that support work‑based learning: automotive donations to the high‑school program, arrangements with Orthopedics Associates and Scenic Rivers for student placements, and a recent Iron Range job fair funded in part by Perkins grant money. North Star Principal Manny noted the district’s growing visibility and partnerships, saying the school is “the first school in Minnesota to partner with US Steel and the Pittsburgh Penguins on a reading champions program.”
The board expressed thanks to donors and agreed to accept and route the donations into the requested programs.
