Students, parents urge Rock Ridge board to appoint Cassie Strand as girls’ hockey coach

Students and parents urged the Rock Ridge Public Schools board at Thursday’s meeting to appoint Cassie Strand as the girls’ high school head coach, saying she built team cohesion and led the program to its best season in years.
“She brought this team together, strengthened this team skill, and made this team into a family,” said Nola, a senior, who described Cassie’s season-long work after stepping in to lead four days before last season began. Ayla Trautwein, a lead senior, told the board that Cassie was “the absolute best coach” and credited the staff with taking the team to the section finals for the first time in over a decade.
Parent speaker Nancy Kwiatkowski said she had seen “no issues” within the team under Cassie’s leadership and noted Cassie’s volunteer work on fundraisers and summer camps that support the program.
The students and parent asked the board to “strongly consider Cassie” for the permanent role. The board did not take formal action on the coaching vacancy during the meeting; the public-comment period concluded and the agenda proceeded to scheduled business.
