Board hears plan to roll out pathways and voluntary senior capstone

District staff presented the academy model and the planned capstone requirement that will be rolled out this year for Rock Ridge high school seniors. The district explained the capstone is voluntary for this initial rollout: students who complete a required career-exploration course and five additional pathway courses (six total) may opt to prepare and present a capstone project to a panel of teachers and community mentors.
The capstone is framed as a culminating professional presentation — comparable to a high-school thesis — and may include research, community partnership work, service projects, or work-based learning that meets a minimum hours threshold. Staff said students can track progress through PowerSchool and counselors will help with registration and verification. Recognition at graduation and other awards assemblies was discussed as possible ways to honor pathway and capstone completers.
Board members asked whether the program could be implemented this year; staff said they already have students who appear ready to participate and that counselors will support qualification and tracking. No vote was required; implementation details and recognition criteria will be refined by staff and brought back to the board as necessary.
