Superintendent honored; administration explains storm-related school closures and shelter use

The Londonderry School Board began its meeting with an announcement that Superintendent Nate Greenberg had been named New Hampshire's 2008'009 Superintendent of the Year.
"I'm deeply honored and really humbled by my selection to represent the superintendents this year," Greenberg told the board, thanking students, staff and the school's administrative team for their support.
Greenberg also explained why the district canceled school during the recent weather event: emergency staff, police and fire provided road assessments and the bus company ran routes; the administration found downed wires and transformers, debris on roads, and low-hanging lines that posed a risk to buses and students. "One of our biggest concerns were low hanging wires and the ability of school buses to get down the roads... so we elected not to have school," he said, adding that reopening would depend on storm developments.
Board members also praised the district's shelter operations during the emergency. One member reported the new high-school gym shelter had hosted nearly 200 people at its peak and that about 60 remained at the time of the meeting. The board noted that a town grant funded the new generator that kept the site operational and highlighted volunteer support for shelter operations.
The board thanked volunteers and emergency personnel for their work and expressed hope that remaining residents without power would be restored quickly. The meeting then continued into a detailed budget workshop.
