Board adds half-time SPED and assistant principal roles, adjusts superintendent contract; approves track resurfacing bid

The Pawnee City Public Schools board approved two half-time positions and a change to the superintendent's contract after discussion of needs, reimbursements and grant prospects.

Superintendent S2 proposed adding a 0.5 FTE elementary special-education teacher and a 0.5 FTE elementary assistant principal/lead teacher to support instructional leadership, paraeducator scheduling and special-education needs. The superintendent said special-education reimbursements typically arrive the following year; he estimated the district's share of cost at about $46,250 and noted a possible $5,000 contribution from a 21st Century grant that is not guaranteed.

Board members debated the sustainability and alternatives (for example, sharing services or internal hires). One board member expressed disappointment that prior arrangements had shifted part-time specialist time away from the district, making the current need more urgent. The motion to add the two positions passed with a majority: Bobby, Julia, Mark and Jason voted yes; Hannah voted no; Hope was absent.

Following that vote, the board approved modifications to the superintendent's contract (adjusting contract proportions and salary language) by unanimous vote.

On facilities business, the board reviewed clarifications to a resurfacing RFP and voted to approve the contractor's bid for maintenance/track resurfacing. The contractor confirmed a two-year warranty on workmanship and materials and said the project would likely take about 10 days once started. The amount reported at the meeting was $4,084.02; the board approved the bid unanimously.
