Kimball schools to pilot Reading Plus and expand behavior-tracking; data to guide wider adoption

Kimball Public Schools will pilot Discovery Education's Reading Plus program in junior high and freshmen/sophomores, district staff told the board.
School staff described the pilot plan: two designated junior-high classes (two groups of six) plus freshmen and sophomores using Reading Plus during Tuesday/Thursday study halls for 20-minute lessons. Teachers will administer a baseline "inside" assessment to place students at individual reading levels, then measure growth over the four-month pilot. District staff said the pilot cost was about $2,000 and that full implementation would be roughly $10,000 if adopted for the school.
Administrators also said they will use Securly classroom-monitoring software to restrict off-task websites and better ensure students use assigned digital lessons during study halls. Separately, elementary staff described rolling out a more formal behavior-tracking system (building on high-school practices) for grades 3–6 to track offenses, escalate responses and improve consistency; the elementary principal said staff and parents were informed and the district will monitor outcomes.
Administrators said they will return to the board in April with pilot data and a request if they propose purchasing the Reading Plus program districtwide.
