Josh Klug, cofounder and chief operating officer of Athero, introduced a data-driven building assessment for Oaks Public Schools, saying the company can provide dashboards and supporting files to inform maintenance and funding decisions. “I'm Josh Klug. I'm 1 of the cofounders and the chief operating officer for Athero,” he said during the meeting.
Anton, Athero’s data engineer, demonstrated the dashboard and executive summary, showing how the tool ranks underperforming elements and estimates potential savings. Anton said the building was “mostly good,” with roughly 70% of elements performing well, but that a subset of windows and facades were generating measurable energy loss and should be prioritized for repair.
Dr. Samuel Afari, the team’s data analyst, reviewed thermal imagery and reported widespread evidence of water infiltration and framing gaps under many windows. He described “hot spots” under windows and white deposits consistent with masonry leaching, and cautioned that, if left unaddressed, the issues can accelerate deterioration and increase energy bills.
The consultants presented per-square-foot and flat-cost scenarios, with examples showing small monthly savings per replaced window and an overall illustrative electricity savings number provided by the presenter. Athero said the dashboard can produce payback-period and ROI estimates tailored to grant criteria, and Josh Klug noted this could strengthen applications for state or federal conservation or energy‑efficiency grants.
Committee members said the dashboard provides a transparent prioritization tool that school leaders can publish to explain why some windows should be replaced while others do not merit immediate work. One member said the tool is particularly useful for deferred‑maintenance planning and grant justification.
Next steps: consultants will provide access to the dashboard and a fuller report for the task force and ICON Architecture to review; the task force agreed to use the data to craft clear, budget‑linked options for any public survey or referendum.
