Superintendent: SED approves safety capital project; district previews athletics planning and device policy expansion

Superintendent O'Hara updated the Chester Union Free School District Board of Education on July 7, reporting that the district's previously approved safety capital project has received State Education Department (SED) approval and that construction activities are likely to begin this summer, subject to materials availability.
"This summer, you will most likely notice construction underway at our schools as part of the previously approved safety capital project, which did recently receive SED approval to move forward," O'Hara said. She cautioned that the time frame for completion depends on materials and that further information will be shared in August regarding the status of the improvements.
O'Hara also previewed a planning process for a proposed athletics facility, saying the district will include opportunities for community engagement and input before moving forward with any proposed referendum. She said more details will be provided in late August.
On student-device policy, O'Hara described an expansion related to a state mandate: the district's academy will move from a policy of no cell-phone use during instructional time to a "bell to bell" prohibition that covers the full school day (including hallways and lunch) for that building; she said there is no change to current elementary-school parameters. She directed families to a "personal device use" tab on the district website and a dedicated email for questions; the June CUFSD newsletter (shared July 3 via ParentSquare) contains related information.
O'Hara also thanked staff for summer programs presently underway, including Camp Invention at Chester Academy, and reminded the board that the next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 20.
