District administrators spent part of the meeting explaining the district's efforts to increase FAFSA completion and how state reporting interacts with local outreach.
Mr. Flanagan described a recent FAFSA workshop the district held and said the district is coordinating with SUNY to offer additional sessions. "We had a FAFSA workshop to help fill out the FAFSA... we put information out today to families on some other additional ways to fill out the FAFSA and some other workshops," Flanagan said.
On state reporting, Flanagan said New York maintains a database the district uses to confirm FAFSA completion and explained administrative steps the district took to access it. "So there is a database in New York State that we use to check out who's filled out the FAFSA," he said. He also described an opt-out process: "It's essentially an opt out form that says we're just not filling out the FAFSA." The district plans to send an email to families with resources and a link to schedule appointments with SUNY counselors to complete applications.
Why it matters: the FAFSA can open financial-aid opportunities for students and the district said it is required by New York State to track completion; the district framed its actions as informational and supportive rather than punitive.
What’s next: the district will continue to coordinate workshops with college partners and send a scheduled email with resources and scheduling links for families.
