Center Moriches district plans limited summer remediation as COVID funds end

A staff member for the Center Moriches Union Free School District told the board that COVID-era funding that previously supported summer remediation programs is no longer available and the district is seeking ways to provide limited remediation and enrichment this summer.
"So right now, we don't have the same amount of funding," the staff member said, adding that the district "is actively looking at that, and hopefully, we should have something at the next work in terms of the plan." The official said the district expects to pull funds from a variety of sources to try to sustain services.
The district noted the budget for next year is "very tight," and the staff member warned that any summer expansion will be constrained by those limits. "We have to try to pull funds from all the resources to see what we can sustain and do in terms of what those students need overall," they said.
Staff outlined facility and operational steps intended to accompany student supports. In response to a question about maintenance, the official said the district will pursue projects over the summer such as painting and patching walls and will create an inventory of classroom items no longer in use to remove or repair them. "We are looking at projects that we will include over the summer. Some of them will be painting, some of them will be patchwork of walls," the staff member said.
The district also confirmed that an outside provider referred to in the discussion as "Empire" will not run its summer programs this year. "With the summer version, is Empire still running their programs as well? They don't," the staff member said.
What happens next: the staff member said a plan should be ready at the next work session and noted that preparations will focus on July and the two- to three-month window during which many maintenance items would be completed. The board's June 17 meeting was mentioned as the next public gathering where staffing and recognition items will be discussed.
