Board readies policy choices to add nonvoting student member under new law

The Caledonia‑Mumford Board of Education discussed how to implement a new state law requiring school boards to include a nonvoting student member starting July 1, 2025.
"This is a non voting member that doesn't go into executive session, but offers their input at the table with us," Superintendent Dr. Chanel said, describing how the student representative would participate.
Dr. Chanel said the district received NISBA (New York State School Boards Association) guidance outlining six different selection methods — from selection by student government officers to a schoolwide election — and urged the board to hold a policy meeting to decide which approach fits the district. She also noted training opportunities: a webinar on April 23 and a Genesee Valley School Board Association training slated in June to onboard the student government representative before the July 1 implementation.
Board members raised logistical concerns, including scheduling conflicts for students involved in extracurriculars and the additional expectations on board members to include and support a student at the table. The board agreed the policy discussion should happen soon enough to allow the district to identify and train a student representative before the new law takes effect.
