Board approves consent agenda; district highlights literacy academy, teachers’ contract and auditorium costs

The Center Moriches Union Free School District Board of Education approved the consent agenda and addressed several operational items Monday, including an update on the auditorium renovation, a newly ratified teachers’ contract and the start of a literacy intervention program.

Superintendent Ricardo said the district “just recently ratified the Santa Marches Teachers Association's contract for the next 5 years” and noted two conditions placed in the contract: a communication clause requiring teachers to use ParentSquare and a grading/progress procedure at the secondary complex that mandates progress indicators every three weeks. Elementary grading procedures remain under discussion.
Administrators also reported the auditorium renovation is complete and preliminary budget figures do not exceed the $1.2 million the community approved in May. “I can say that looking at the preliminary budget, we have not exceeded the 1,200,000 that the community voted on in May,” Superintendent Ricardo told the board.
The superintendent also announced a literacy academy planned to begin in January that will run about 16 weeks and operate at both the elementary and middle school levels; administrators said students will be identified at the building level and that grant funding was identified to help pay for the program.
During public comment the board accepted a community donation of $5,000 to the high school robotics team from the Quartieri family. Board members said they would post further budget details and continue committee-level discussion on athletics programming and other budget priorities ahead of the January budget workshop.
The board adjourned following committee reports and calendar announcements.
