The Brunswick Central School District Board voted June 1 to place a proposed new high-school cell-phone policy on the table for consideration.
Chair (S3) introduced the policy, saying it responds to the governor’s new mandate for bell-to-bell restrictions. The superintendent told the board the policy was developed through a shared decision-making process that included building administrators and parents, and outlined practical details such as where students would store phones and how violations would be handled. "It's a mandate... it's bell to bell," the superintendent said.
The superintendent and board members discussed practical rollout plans during public comment. The new principal will host a parent seminar once the summer construction schedule is set, the superintendent said, and the policy will be presented at open houses and PTA meetings. Commenters recommended inviting a professional speaker and using brief informational presentations at regular meetings to build parent understanding.
Board members said they will work with the PTSA on outreach; the superintendent emphasized that certain logistics (for example, pouches) were cost-prohibitive and that students likely will use lockers for storage during the school day.
The board carried the motion to put the policy on the table for formal consideration; further refinement and formal adoption will occur after additional feedback and planning.
