Students honored in Carson City School District essay contest; Greater Nevada Credit Union gives $1,000 to schools foundation

The Carson City School District Board of Trustees moved the district’s annual American Citizen essay contest ahead of public comment to recognize winners and hear selected readings from elementary through high school.

Superintendent Fuelling and trustees introduced winners and invited first‑place students to read excerpts. One elementary reader began her essay, "Promoting unity in our country," urging respectful disagreement and empathy: "Unity is super important because it helps others make friends and value them as a person." The board and audience applauded the student performers.

During public comment that followed, a Greater Nevada Credit Union representative presented a $1,000 check to the Carson Schools Foundation and underscored the credit union’s ongoing partnerships with the district, including attendance‑focused giveaways and school sponsorships. John Hager, foundation president, later reported foundation donations totaled $83,000 in calendar year 2023, including a $60,000 gift from the Vera Family Trust and $8,500 in staff donations; he described current allocations of approximately $67,000 for the school year (department mini‑grants, Jump Start reimbursements, AP exam fee reductions and elementary/middle school grants).

The board paused for photos and thanked students, families and foundation partners for their support.
