Miss Turney, presenting a central office update under the district strategic plan pillar for teaching and learning excellence, told the board the district had over 481 elementary students attending summer school with 68 teachers and noted the district is piloting a game-based math program called Math for Love.
Turney said the district has trained 76 substitutes in a "Strategies for Substitute Success" class and will hold a session in West Wendover to increase substitute capacity. She also reported that the district is still finalizing plans for a science textbook adoption and that budget constraints and the state's approved textbook list are factors in deciding scope and timing.
Turney highlighted that 49 new teachers will attend RISE, the district retention program, and described next-week activities for new hires including campus visits, mentor assignments and training on district tech tools.
The update also included upcoming threat assessment training for administrators, nurses, school psychologists and social workers, and staff noted progress on drafting AI and cell-phone policies. Trustees asked how the district will measure summer-school success; Turney said she used MAP-score gains as one indicator and that the Math for Love curriculum includes a built-in pre/post test.
