The board reviewed proposed changes to policy JJDAB that would permit narrow exceptions for students to transport themselves or other students in specific instructional circumstances, such as Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs that require travel between campuses.
Superintendent Anderson described the intent: some programs require a student to drive between campuses and the policy would allow exceptions under a process with written consent and site-administrator approval. "There would you'd have to have a consent form, and, like, approval for a student to be able to do that," Anderson said.
Trustees pressed for clearer language about what counts as an "activity" (for example, whether assigned class travel or co-curricular events are covered), whether requirements from the parents-transportation policy (JJDAA) should be referenced (valid license, driving history, insurance), and whether a fully executed consent form should indicate school or district approval. Anderson and staff said the policy aims to allow only limited, case-by-case exceptions and that additional clarity and cross-references would be added.
No vote was taken; trustees asked staff to refine language to specify administrator approval, link to JJDAA requirements as appropriate, and make clear the consent form is site-approved before the district considers it "fully executed."
