Board discusses handbook changes to require cell phones be stored in lockers all day

Presenter told the board that a provision in a recent budget/senate bill has prompted the district to revisit student handbooks and that, as written currently, the handbook will require students to bring phones but keep them in lockers all day. "So, yes... we're just going to say, you're welcome to bring them to school, but they have to stay in the locker all day long," Presenter said.
Presenter noted a practical complication: many locker locks were removed during COVID to speed transitions between classes, making lockers easy to access. "During COVID, we took all the locks off the lockers... we're talking about putting the locks back on the lockers because now we're going to have a little more value being stolen," Presenter said, adding that pockets inside classroom doors are another option but do not prevent between-class access. Chair and Presenter discussed enforcement challenges for student movement and phone access between classes.
Presenter said the district will revise the handbooks and review them again next month; changes are expected to include specific language and implementation details.
