A board member said health and IEP exceptions made the first option preferable. Board members discussed practical concerns including: how parents or working caregivers can retrieve confiscated devices; ensuring students with medical needs retain communication; and whether handbook language would be in effect on the first day of school. Presenter confirmed the recommended language will be included in student handbooks and that the board will consider the policy for a first read in July and final approval in August to meet statutory timelines.
"The first policy is what I am recommending," Presenter said, noting the updated policy aligns with statutory requirements and gives administrators flexibility to address students' health and IEP needs.
Director of policy implementation will bring a first reading to the July meeting and the district plans to finalize handbook content before the start of school.
