West Islip board adopts revised harassment policies to align with state changes

The West Islip Union Free School District Board of Education on Monday approved revisions to its harassment policies following a second reading intended to align district policy with recent New York State changes.
Chair Anthony Tussie asked for a motion to adopt the revised policies—including policy series referenced on the agenda as 61.21 and related employee regulations and exhibits, and student harassment policies 75.51 and related documents. The board voted to adopt the revised policies after a brief opportunity for discussion. "As discussed, the recent changes to harassment policy in New York state schools have been driven by several key reasons, and we are aligning the state and federal laws, increasing awareness and transparency, creating, promoting a culture of safety and respect," the superintendent said during the discussion.
Following adoption, the board voted to remove policy numbers 32.31 and 32.32 (complaints and grievances by staff and students), which were described on the agenda as obsolete because the new provisions are inclusive of those topics.
All motions related to these policy actions were moved, seconded and carried on voice votes. The board said these changes create operational efficiencies and bring the district into alignment with state guidance.
