Two West Islip students sworn in as student board representatives

The West Islip Union Free School District Board of Education on Monday introduced and swore in two high school students who will serve as student representatives for the 2025–26 school year.
Superintendent Dr. Romanelli said about 20 students applied for the student board position after a statewide proposal encouraged boards to include a student member. Applicants submitted videos and participated in interviews with administrators and stakeholders; two students emerged from a close scoring process. "We are really, really interested in hearing your viewpoints and all you have to say," Dr. Romanelli said as he introduced the new representatives.
Noah Butler will be the student representative and Veronica Ramos will serve as the alternate. Dr. Romanelli said both students will officially begin their roles July 1 and that summer attendance is optional. The board provided name plates and a seat on the dais for the students and invited them to review meeting materials ahead of time.
The addition follows the district's outreach to West High and the building's selection process. The superintendent encouraged the students to meet with administrators before meetings if they wished and said the district will provide meeting materials in advance to help them prepare.
The board applauded the students after the swearing-in and took a photograph to mark the occasion.
