The meeting also featured student awards. Matthew Khan, president of the board of directors of Friends of Bridge, presented winners of the Diana Perron Memorial essay contest on substance abuse; he read an excerpt that began, "substance abuse is a multifaceted issue that impacts health, personal relationships, and society as a whole." Winners named included Damaris Gody Garcia (Brooklyn Avenue School), Vanessa Harrison (Robert Carbonaro School), and Alexander Lopez (William L. Buck School). The board presented Presidential Awards of Educational Excellence and recognized winners in math (SAWA contest), the Olympics of the Visual Arts, and the Art and Heart exhibition; multiple principals and teachers joined presenters on stage.
Trustees closed the superintendent's report by congratulating students and inviting parents to refreshments; the meeting then moved to brief reports and business items. The board did not take formal action related to the awards or the trustee recognition beyond the presentations and proclamations.
