Fairfield Area SD board approves consent items and highlights library, campus upgrades before school year

The Fairfield Area SD board approved its consent agenda by roll call after brief discussion and heard progress reports on a library renovation and multiple campus improvement projects as the district prepares to welcome students back.

Mr. Taylor, addressed by the chair during the meeting, said the district is ‘‘ready to start the new school year’’ and that 10 newly hired teachers completed the district’s induction program. He said the district will welcome about 880 students back and suggested board members might tour the finished library before the next meeting.

Taylor provided a project update on the library renovation: new furniture is scheduled to arrive on Thursday and staff expect the installation to be completed in one day, with flooring and painting already finished and new glass rooms installed. The district plans to set up makerspace equipment and 3-D printers once furniture arrives.

A board member responsible for facilities described campus work completed over the summer: the parking lot has been resealed; stadium lights are being installed; auditorium stage curtains are finished; greenhouse work continues with an electrician scheduled to finish; a fence has been installed near the soccer field; a courtyard pavilion awaits a metal roof; the scoreboard has been demoed with a new one slated for installation next week; and outside doors were rekeyed with electronic locks replaced.

Taylor also noted the welding space remains under renovation. The district is coordinating with HACC and Hagerstown to secure an instructor and add a few features to the space; the program is expected to begin in the spring.

Votes at a glance: the consent agenda (described in the meeting as items A through AA) passed on a motion and second; the roll-call vote recorded in the meeting showed yes votes from Bollinger, Degenero, Kershner, Sears, Sturgis and Lohrmann.

Next steps noted at the meeting included finishing library furniture installation, continuing greenhouse and welding-room work, and scheduling a short tour for board members once final touches are complete.
