Committee member presses Fairfield Area SD staff on a la carte charges and parental visibility into lunch balances

A Committee member raised concerns about how students are charged for school meals and whether parents can easily monitor their children’s lunch balances. “So you have a kid that's going in there and getting a cheeseburger and a milk and getting charged for it,” the Committee member said, contrasting that with a child who “would take an apple” and not be charged.

Staff member sought an estimate of how many purchases are a la carte versus reimbursable meals, asking, “I don't need the exact number, but your best guess, like, what percentage of it is in a la carte versus the stuff that we are in compliance with?” The exchange centered on parents’ frustration that ‘‘their child's lunch balance keeps going up and up and up’’ without clear, easily accessible information.

The staff and the Committee member discussed ways to give parents better visibility. The staff member suggested making pricing and category details available for parents to reference and repeatedly mentioned the idea of an application or posted guidance so families ‘‘can understand’’ charges and balances. The Committee member pressed for a durable reference the community can view rather than ad hoc explanations.
