District proposes raising graduation requirement to 25 credits and adding personal finance; scheduling changes planned

Presenter (S5) reviewed the program-of-studies draft and recommended the board approve an increase in graduation requirements from 24 to 25 credits to accommodate a newly required personal-finance course. "We are going to recommend the increase of from 24 graduation credits to 25, because personal finance is now a PBE requirement," S5 said.
S5 also recommended increasing required math credits from three to four, arguing the district’s block schedule allows students to earn additional credits (students could earn eight credits per year on the block schedule versus seven previously). "So seniors of next year ... will have had the opportunity to earn 2 more credits than they would have otherwise," S5 said as part of the rationale.
The draft also proposed sunsetting some low-enrollment electives (for example, mythology and creative writing) while adding new offerings such as a local-history course tied to Braddock’s Field and elective STEM classes. S5 said staff would survey ensemble and performing-arts students and attempt an A/B rotation for electives so performing-arts options remain available without blocking other electives.
S5 asked for approval next week to begin scheduling: "We're hoping for approval next week so that we can begin the scheduling process." No formal vote was recorded in this meeting; the draft and the recommendations will return to the board for a scheduled vote if the board moves forward as planned.
