School board approves BAA grants for Daktronics scoreboard package and strength equipment

At the meeting, Shelley, the BAA president, described the association's anchor fundraisers (including a craft show she said recently generated about $9,000) and said the purchases would come from the BAA account. "We have over $267,000," Shelley said when board members pressed about the source of funds. BAA leadership recommended the Daktronics package in part because it offers an educational component for students.
Mr. Hawkins, who presented the hardware options, described three vendor quotes for a digital scoreboard, an LED scoreboard and shot clocks, and explained that the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association is requiring shot clocks in coming school years. He said the Daktronics quote includes installation, wiring and a classroom component the district could use to teach broadcasting skills. Hawkins said the most expensive example shown was "about 114" thousand dollars and that other quotes were near $97,000–$99,000.
Board members questioned the size of the BAA fund balance and whether money raised through student participation fees and fundraisers should be spent down. One board member said, "But that doesn't change the fact that you're sitting on $200,000," expressing concern about holding a large reserve. Shelley and other BAA representatives said the group had a plan to reduce its balance by funding larger-ticket items that benefit many students.
The board moved to approve the two grants as presented and approved the strength- and conditioning equipment quote in a separate motion. Both motions passed by voice vote; the meeting record shows the motions were seconded and adopted. No formal roll-call vote was recorded for the BAA motions in the transcript.
The board also discussed sharing BAA agendas and minutes with board members and confirmed that the BAA meets monthly by Zoom on the first Monday at 7:00 p.m.
