The Racing Commission approved an emergency aftercare grant at its Dec. 18 meeting to assist Lucky 7 Horse Rescue with veterinary dental surgery.
The executive director said the commission’s previously adopted standards for emergency use of aftercare funds applied to the request. The commission, after review with veterinary staff, approved "a request for a grant up to $2,500 to cover all or a portion of those surgical costs," the chair said.
Commissioner Goodman noted there were season fines totaling $15,764 and asked whether some of that money could be allocated to Racehorse Aftercare. Staff responded the fines went into the general aftercare account historically and that the aftercare committee would meet in January to make recommendations about grant totals for 2026; authorizing the funds now for emergencies would reduce the total available for planned grants.
No further conditions were added to the emergency grant approval; the commission approved the request consistent with its emergency-aftercare guidelines.
