Spring Grove Area SD honors staff and students; students report lessons from national leadership summit

The Spring Grove Area School District honored staff and students at its Aug. 25 meeting, recognizing educators and support staff for districtwide and building-level excellence.
The acting superintendent presented awards including Tabitha (named for outstanding elementary educator in the K–6 program), Donna Huckenberry as outstanding elementary support staff, Elaine Wolf as districtwide outstanding support staff (data manager/PIMS support), and Chrissy Kenney as outstanding secondary educator/home-and-school visitor. The superintendent praised each recipient for leadership, program development and community service.
Jeff Laux introduced two students who attended the National Student Leadership Summit in Indianapolis. Senior Darren Gross described leadership takeaways such as ‘‘putting yourself out there’’ and the ‘‘platinum rule’’ for treating people as they want to be treated; he noted speakers discussed social media’s dual role for opportunity and risk. Eva Dietrich said the conference encouraged resilience and student leadership and made her appreciate the district’s extracurricular support.
Board members thanked students and staff for representing the district; the superintendent and others encouraged community attendance at an upcoming Hall of Fame halftime event.
The recognitions and student reports were presented as part of the superintendent’s report and were received by the board without objection.
