Curriculum committee outlines course-selection schedule, ESY dates and team travel requests

Michelle McGowan, chair of the curriculum and education committee, reported the committee reviewed the 2026–27 course selection guide and a timeline to get students scheduled ahead of ninth-grade orientation.
"The course selection guide will be provided to students in March, which is happening now. I think it's at, I believe it's next Tuesday... So it's actually February," McGowan said, describing a Feb. course-selection night at Academy Park and counselor scheduling work in late July so master schedules are ready before the fall orientation.
The committee recommended several items for the board’s February agenda. McGowan asked the board to approve the Extended School Year (ESY) program with dates listed for 06/29/2026 through 07/30/2026, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. She also said administration is seeking approval to contract two speech-language pathologist assistants to support ESY students.
On extracurriculars, McGowan reported that the Philadelphia Eagles sponsored the girls’ flag-football program in its first year but did not renew the sponsorship. "So the MOU is currently to ensure that the 2026 season... we'll have coaches and so that way we can continue the program," she said.
The committee recommended approval for Academy Park’s boys track team to attend the Adidas National Championship in Virginia Beach, March 19–22, 2026, at an estimated cost of $12,650 to be paid from the general fund.
McGowan also reported a professional-services agreement for mural and locker-room improvements by artist Emmanuel Fitzpatrick, with work cited for 02/26/2026–03/26/2026. The presenter repeatedly referenced a small payment amount; the transcript records inconsistent figures but the committee characterized the cost as limited and to be paid from the general fund.
The committee said there was consensus and no policy objections to these items and recommended the board approve the listed items at the next business meeting. The committee’s next meeting is Feb. 25 at 2 p.m.
