Staff updated the board on social‑emotional learning (SEL) curriculum changes and a new implementation grant.
A presenter (speaker S19) told the board the district will pause Leader in Me and pilot Second Step’s digital resources across kindergarten through fourth grade, after surveying teachers and testing a one‑month digital trial. “We were awarded $10,000 which will fully cover the implementation of that program for the next 3 years, if we choose to do so,” the presenter said.
Program scope and supports: staff described 20 lessons (four units of five lessons) and a planned implementation calendar, teacher check‑ins and committee realignment to monitor roll‑out. The Project AWARE award will also fund supplemental classroom materials, lanyards for staff to use consistent language, and a partnership with Lehigh University for SABERS assessment data analysis to measure SEL implementation across tiers.
Why it matters: the change shifts the district from an older, hard‑copy program toward a vendor’s digital SEL suite and is funded by a targeted mental‑health grant, reducing immediate local budget impact. The board heard the administration’s recommendation and will follow the usual approval process when implementation details are formalized.
