Pittsburgh Public Schools’ Business and Finance Committee received an update Tuesday on the district’s 2026 general fund budget that projects an operating deficit of about $6.3 million while meeting the board’s 5% fund-balance policy through 2026, officials said.
Ron Joseph, the district’s chief financial officer, told the committee the district’s updated spending plan shows $732,300,000 in budgeted expenditures for 2026 and a projected $6,300,000 deficit. Joseph said much of the improvement from the preliminary budget stems from changes in the state budget and reforms to cyber charter tuition, which the district estimates will reduce cyber charter tuition payments by roughly $12.1 million annually.
“The budget does now adhere to the board 5% fund balance policy through 2026, thanks largely in part to the cyber charter school payment savings passed in the governor’s budget,” Joseph said.
