Ebony Pugh presented a series of distinguished achievement recognitions at the Dec. 17 legislative meeting of the Pittsburgh Board of Public Education.
Pugh announced that Lucas Steed, a Pittsburgh Allardice student, earned the Jerome Bettis Leadership Award for leadership on and off the field; he was nominated by his coach, Mark Matson, and will be recognized at an on-field ceremony during a future Pittsburgh Steelers home game. "Congratulations, Lucas, on this outstanding achievement," Pugh said.
Pugh also named 15 Pittsburgh schools recognized by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation for the 2025 'America's Healthiest Schools' list. The honors cited performance across nine health categories including school health services, wellness policy implementation, nutrition and food access, physical education, social-emotional health, staff well-being, tobacco-free policies and family engagement. Principals accepted recognition for their schools, including Reethi Ray (Pittsburgh Arsenal), Tiawanzo (Pittsburgh Brookline), Russell Patterson (Pittsburgh Faison), Lisa Stewart (Pittsburgh Miller), Dr. Maria Paul (Pittsburgh Pioneer) and Ashanti Jones (Pittsburgh Sunnyside). Pittsburgh Perry High School, led by Principal Molly O'Malley, received the program's highest distinction of "all star" status for demonstrating excellence across all nine categories.
The board applauded the students, educators and school communities honored for their efforts to advance whole-child health and equity.
