Board approves 2026-27 school calendar after heated debate over equity; vote 6-3

The Salisbury Township School District board voted 6-3 Feb. 18 to approve the proposed 2026-27 school calendar after a sustained debate about equity and scheduling.
"If we're going to be giving this as a gift ... administrators are going to receive more days off than they would if we followed precedent," said Mrs. McKelvey, a board member, who argued the extended December block as drafted would advantage 12-month administrators relative to 10-month teachers and suggested possible remedies such as adding personal days or reducing teacher workdays. McKelvey said administration's average number of off days increased in recent years and urged the board to acknowledge and address the inequity.
The board chair and other members defended the draft calendar as an attempt to align Salisbury with other Lehigh Valley districts and to reduce scheduling conflicts for vocational partners. "I don't think the administration sat down and said, how do we give ourselves more time off?" the chair said, urging the board to consider the regional coordination rationale.
Board members provided examples of neighboring districts' calendars during the discussion: Whitehall's last day was cited as June 3, Southern Lehigh as June 4, and Northwestern's June 10 date included four built-in snow days; Salisbury's proposed last day was June 9 in the draft materials presented.
After discussion, the board held a roll-call vote; the motion carried 6 yes, 3 no.
What happens next: With calendar approval the district will incorporate the schedule into family communications; board members who raised equity concerns asked administrators to follow up with options for balancing time off across employee groups before future calendar cycles.
