Board members spent significant time at the opening of the June 9 meeting remembering Wardell “Del” Jackson, who died May 25. Directors and community members described Jackson’s 30 years as a middle‑school math teacher, longtime coach and a generous presence at board meetings who often brought gifts and mentored colleagues.
Members recounted personal stories, the district circulated a card from the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, and the board announced a celebration of life scheduled for June 28 at the Media Heights Golf Club. Citizens who spoke later in the meeting echoed the board’s sentiments and urged the board to seek a replacement who shares Jackson’s character and commitment to teachers and students.
Board leadership also explained the legally required public process to fill the vacancy: under the board’s timeline the board has 30 days to appoint someone to serve until the December swearing‑in; the appointee will be placed on the November ballot to run for the remainder of the term through November 2027. The board intends to appoint and swear in the chosen candidate at the June 23 meeting and will assign committee and liaison responsibilities at that time.
