Education committee: literacy night praised; district readies personal finance course and posts gifted plan

District education staff updated the committee on literacy outreach, curriculum planning and comprehensive planning items, and shared next steps for required graduation changes.

Mr. Pine summarized a parent literacy night held in October: teachers and reading specialists demonstrated structured literacy and the district posted a literacy resource page and a walkthrough video (the public recording had technical problems). "I think it was successful," Pine said, noting modest in‑person attendance but useful teacher demonstrations.

On curriculum, staff briefed members on the state’s personal finance toolkit and said the state expects a standalone personal finance course for grades 9–12 to be in place for the 2026–27 school year. District staff are developing a local plan that could offer the required content as a half or full credit and are considering whether it will pair with existing business or math offerings; the committee emphasized the course should be taught by appropriately certified teachers if it counts toward content credits.

The district also posted its NLSD comprehensive planning documents and gifted services plan for the required public review period. Administration recommended modest set‑asides for gifted programming in next year’s budget and noted the district will examine proportionality in gifted identification as part of state guidance.

Additionally, Mrs. Fink reported the Backpack Buddies program now serves 92 students and that the district received an $8,750 breakfast expansion grant to buy mobile carts for Flemington Elementary to boost participation in alternative breakfast models.

Next steps include finalizing the local plan for the personal finance requirement, continuing the 28‑day public comment period for the comprehensive plan, and rolling out gifted facilitator training early next year.
