A staff presenter (S12) said the program is research-based, accredited by the International Dyslexia Association and specifically targets phonemic awareness for students with dyslexia. The request is for a one-time investment of $16,528 to train four teachers (with a plan to have a total of five teachers trained over time) and buy materials so the intervention can be offered to both special education and regular-education students with dyslexia.
S12 said the proposed funding split is 25% from Peters Elementary, 25% from Slatington Elementary and 50% from the district’s special education budget. Committee members asked whether the program would replace existing programs; S12 said it would be an additional option, not a replacement, and that it would provide another evidence-based tool for students who struggle with phonemic awareness.
Next steps: the administration said it will place the request on the full board agenda for approval.
