Local students outline Odyssey project, aim for regional and world competition

Students from an Odyssey of the Mind team described their race-themed performance and technical work to the Montoursville Area SD board, saying the project taught engineering, teamwork and creative problem-solving.

The presenter explained that the competition format now gives higher scores for creative answers and that students practiced within a one-minute thinking window and a three-minute answer window. Team members detailed three destinations in the performance and said two obstacles would be provided by the official challenge while one would be created by the team (a turtle-stack obstacle that will be knocked over and cleared without harming the turtles in the scenario). The presenter said the car was engineered with a zero-turn capability and a simple two-lever control to meet course needs.

"We want more creative," the presenter said, describing recent rule changes that reward inventive solutions. The team said the regional competition is scheduled March 1 in Burbank and expressed hope of advancing to World Finals in Michigan later in the year.

Board members and attendees praised the students’ presentation, noting the learning outcomes—gear ratios, torque, brainstorming and teamwork—were as valuable as competitive success. The presenter thanked parents and volunteers for their help and invited the board and public to follow the team’s regional progress.

The board did not take formal action on the presentation; it served as an informational item and recognition of students' extracurricular learning.

Looking ahead, team members said they will continue refining the car’s maneuverability and performance features in the lead-up to regionals.
