Nutrition Group renewal offers small guarantee; board told free employee lunches will end

Secretary Caldwell updated the board on a negotiated renewal with Nutrition Group, saying the vendor's latest offer includes a small guaranteed profit for the food-service fund after years of operating losses. He told members that earlier contracts had large negative guarantees, but the new renewal proposed a near-$1,000 positive guarantee.
Caldwell also discussed a proposed increase in paid-student lunch prices and said he would consider an increase if Nutrition Group could benchmark neighboring district prices. "I want numbers from the other districts, what their charges are," he said. He later clarified proposed prices in the discussion, noting proposed elementary and secondary price points to bring the district closer to peers.
Administrators acknowledged a longstanding practice of some staff receiving free lunches on the nutrition operating dime and said that practice will end next year; they estimated roughly $10,000 per year previously absorbed from operations and said ending it will help the fund return to self-sustainability. Board members also requested a report on student account balances and current free/reduced eligibility counts.
The renewal and price proposals will be brought forward with supporting comparative data and equipment-replacement plans if the food-service fund generates surplus revenue.
