A Mount Lebanon School District staff member updated the school board on LIBO United, a working group focused on equity and inclusion, and outlined the group's mission, schedule and training plans.
The presenter said the group's mission is to ensure "a safe and inclusive and welcoming school environment that recognizes and celebrates the diverse identities within our community so everyone feels a sense of belonging." She described a vision in which "every student, family, faculty, and staff member feels at home in Mount Lebanon." The group, formed last fall, will hold monthly meetings and include subcommittees to work on professional development and curriculum changes.
The presenter said sign-ups for participants are open through Sept. 16 and that the next LIBO United meeting is scheduled for Sept. 17, to be held virtually from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. The group plans to update the board four times during the school year, with reports this month and further updates in November, March and May.
She outlined subcommittee goals to develop a comprehensive professional development plan for all staff focused on district culture, equity and inclusion, to ensure stakeholders feel safe and supported, and to promote culturally responsive curriculum and instructional strategies across grades.
On start-of-year training, the presenter said all staff received Title IX training and legal updates, an overview of district safety expectations, and instruction on threat assessment and situational awareness. She also said staff received ALICE active-shooter response training. Administrators were provided additional training on threat assessment, an introduction to the National Incident Management System and incident command principles for schools, Title IX legal updates tailored to administrators, and guidance on supporting students.
The presenter said student services reviewed threat-assessment protocols and suicide-prevention approaches, covered the ChildLine reporting process, and discussed implementation of student-monitoring tools — mentioned in the meeting as "gaggle and go guardian" — intended to protect students from cyberbullying and other online risks. She emphasized the necessity of maintaining confidentiality when discussing student situations.
The presenter said the group replaced graduating student members with new student participants and expects more staff sign-ups before the next meeting. She closed by reiterating the schedule for future board updates and the group's plan to report on first-quarter work at the November update.
