Board weighs monthly short budget updates to avoid annual crunch

Board members on Sept. 19 debated how to make budget oversight more continuous and less prone to end‑of‑year “crunch” decision making. The idea, prompted by board member Chad Thomas and discussed by Superintendent Doctor Oberg, is to set aside five to ten minutes at each monthly committee meeting for a short budget update — for example, to highlight any single item that administration thinks the board should know about.
Doctor Oberg said some requirements constrain the process (public meeting rules and advertising costs) but that the district can present concise updates; he told the board these would begin in October and asked members to email specific questions to the superintendent and administrators in advance. "We'd bring to the board the idea of maybe every committee meeting every month setting, like, 5 to 10 minutes aside where we'd get some kind of a budget update," a board leader summarized.
Board members emphasized that such updates would not replace formal review and approval of monthly reports and bills, but would be intended to surface costly items earlier in the year so members are informed before near‑term votes. Administration agreed to start the brief presentations in October and to provide a follow‑up schedule and materials.
