Parents urge clearer coach‑hiring standards and express frustration over a student‑athlete investigation

The board president responded that emails to the board are routed to administration and that the board’s role is oversight, not case management. A district administrator noted there are personnel‑ and labor‑law constraints on what can be shared publicly.
“First started that email process December 12. No response,” Waring said. “As of January 21, no response. I sent a follow‑up email. Again, no response.”
Virgil Knox, another resident, used his allotted time to criticize broader trends in education and urged changes he characterized as returning to more practical, disciplined instruction. His remarks were broadly critical of schools rather than a single discrete agenda item.
Jen Mackey, a parent and former coach, urged the board to prioritize student mental‑health considerations when hiring coaches, citing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the outsized influence coaches can have on teenagers’ well‑being. Mackey asked the board to ensure upcoming fall‑season coaching hires (football, soccer) select candidates who will encourage and support student athletes.
“Please, please, please take our boys into consideration,” Mackey said, urging careful coach selection and training to protect student mental health.
Board and administrative responses emphasized constraints on discussing personnel matters in public, referred concerned residents to the administration for follow up, and noted closed sessions were held earlier and would be held again after the meeting to address personnel matters in private.
